Birthing a Civilization Amidst the Decay of the Old:
The Shift from 6th to the 7th Ray

“He
not busy being born is busy dyin’.” --Bob Dylan
Our current social
institutions and the mental paradigms that support them are suffering from
“civilizational chronic fatigue.” Have you noticed that many old patterns no
longer seem to work, yet countless people continue them despite feeling
exhausted and stressed out, because they do not see any other way to live? As
the moldering garbage pile of old, limiting beliefs and separative attitudes
heats up like a compost pile, we can smell the “old world odor” of decay. The
current upheaval is the composting of the old system to nurture the growth of
new forms carrying new light and new vision.
Those who live in a
cloud of foreboding and fear have only to shift their awareness from what is
breaking down to the dynamic new life that is growing all around us. This
immediately brings a sense of upliftment. We seem to have needed a crisis this
acute –with terrorism, war, mounting debt, environmental destruction, economic
decline, tightening of media control, and mounting threats to our
constitutional freedoms – to wake us up. Solutions to these crises do not lie
within the current paradigm of separation and greed, but rather are emerging
from a spiritual consciousness of human unity and co-creation with the Divine.
This is really a
crisis of the darkness before the dawn. A crisis is successfully resolved
through accurately identifying the crisis, building a new point of spiritual
tension around what has to be done, and then using the will to take clear
action and emerge from the crisis. We are still at the point of trying to
identify the true crisis. The crisis is not really terrorism or economic
decline (which are symptoms), but the control of the resources of this planet
by a small elite for their own benefit, ignoring the terrible suffering they
impose on the rest of humanity through their greed, separativeness and
selfishness.
And while many
brave souls of outstanding courage and selflessness are standing up to the
injustice, greed and violence of the old world order, it is not everyone’s
dharma or life task to do this. We do not all need to fight the old order, as
it is rapidly destroying itself. However, we must each find compassionate
ways to relieve the suffering the old order is causing, while at the same
time, developing detachment from that which is dying.
To do this, we need
to focus on the breakthrough in consciousness that is occurring at the same
time as the breakdown of old forms. The choices we each make day to day serve
either the new order or the old. A great number of people are needed now to
build the new civilization, to show what’s possible and to give hope to those
who are despairing that a better world is possible. Everywhere around the
world, people are already building new lives of love and creativity, even as
the old society is breaking down all around us. A new civilization with a
higher frequency is being born, from the lighted hearts and minds of awakened
human beings in all nations.
Eliminating
Truth Decay
Through a
simple shift in perspective we can focus our attention away from what is
dying to what is being born, from the world of separation, violence, and
greed, to the world of interdependence, love and sharing. To make this
shift requires that we become as acutely conscious of our emotional and
mental diet as we are of our food diets. Westerners are not only
overstuffed with processed, poor quality physical food, but we are
suffering from pre-processed, glamorous and violent emotional diets, and
nutritionless mental food that gives us superficial and useless
descriptions of what is happening in the world.
We need to become
more spiritually awake to what we consume on every level of our being each day
if we are to free ourselves from the noxious fumes of our decaying society.
And the biggest decay of all in our world is “truth decay”— a disregard for
telling the truth in all levels of our society, but more significantly, a
closing off to higher spiritual truths.
The Shift From
the Sixth to the Seventh Ray
What is the
deeper cause of the upheaval and chaos in our world today? Insights from
the Ageless Wisdom (the golden thread which connects the inner, hidden
teachings of the world’s spiritual traditions) can shed light on the
deeper causes of our current crisis. This Wisdom teaches that all life is
an expression of different frequencies of cosmic energies, called “ray”
energies. There are seven basic ray energies, like the seven colors of the
spectrum. In their totality they embody all of the divine aspects of God,
or the one basic energy of the Universe. Various rays cycle in and out of
influence on the planet over specific periods of time, providing different
energetic impulses for the unfoldment of consciousness.
These seven rays
are: The First Ray of Will and Power, the Second Ray of Love/Wisdom, the Third
Ray of Active Intelligence, the Fourth Ray of Harmony Through Conflict, the
Fifth Ray of Concrete Science, the Sixth Ray of Devotion and Idealism, the
Seventh Ray of Ceremonial Order and Rhythm. These ray energies condition each
individual’s personality and Soul.
Long cycles of
activity and whole civilizations are governed by incoming and outgoing rays,
which condition all aspects of human life. As a ray cycles into expression on
earth, new ideas, impulses and life force affect changes in human life and
society. As a ray leaves expression, the underlying energy that has supported
the forms of a social order is withdrawn, and the structures begin their
inevitable decline. Such is the situation today.
The Sixth Ray of
Devotion and Idealism has been a primary influence in human affairs for the
past 2,000 years of the Piscean era. The Sixth Ray energy has helped humanity
develop the capacity to imagine higher ideals in religion, politics and
education, which is evident in the devotion to current scientific ideologies
and religious belief systems. This Ray emphasizes aspiration towards God
transcendent, but often does not apply the ideals in daily life. The Sixth Ray
also has tendencies towards fanaticism, personality worship and the desire to
impose beliefs on others – a tendency that manifests strongly when a ray
reaches the end of its cycle of expression.
This is the deeper
cause of the fanatical fundamentalism we see in very part of the world today.
The Sixth Ray of Devotion and Idealism is most clearly expressed by religious
fundamentalism in all religions and nations, some of whom may be reactionaries
or fanatics. Some, in desperation from being unheard or unloved, and lacking
all hope for a better life, lash out in violence and anger. There are terrible
tragedies going on, but this is only the shattering of crystallized and
fanatical religious fundamentalism—Muslim, Christian, Jewish, or Hindu --or
economic and scientific fundamentalism.
The Sixth Ray rules
emotionalism in religion and ideologies, and can be seen in chauvinistic
patriotism or scientific dogmatism that refuses to admit new data or
hypotheses outside the current paradigm. The Sixth Ray of Devotion and
Idealism is waning in influence, and the Seventh Ray of Ceremonial Order and
Rhythm is entering with the incoming Aquarian era. During this shift, the
clashing of these two energies is producing chaos and turmoil in the world.
The gradual but
increasing Seventh Ray energy works to create new forms and rhythms of daily
living based on group consciousness and awareness of the whole, rather than
individualistic approaches. The 7th Ray brings Divine Purpose into new forms
that more fully respond to the incoming spiritual energy. It helps human
beings contact and recognize God within themselves and all humanity – God
Immanent – bringing together Spirit and matter. The Seventh Ray provides the
impetus for manifesting spiritual principles here on earth, in our daily
lives, in contrast to the earlier Sixth Ray emphasis on an other-worldly
spirituality trying to reach a transcendent God beyond a sinful world.
The Seventh Ray
sees all life – the planet and all peoples and species-- as sacred. The inflow
of Seventh Ray energy is the inner, hidden cause of the environmental movement
and the health and fitness movement --caring for the earth and our bodies as
temples of the indwelling Spirit. Those under influence of the Seventh Ray are
innovators who work with steady practicality to create new cultural, economic
and political forms, such as consensus-based decision-making,
multi-stakeholder dialogues, socially responsible businesses, community
supported agriculture, and the use of new participatory rituals to affirm the
oneness of all life.
Conflicts today
both within and between nations are usually based on clashes between those who
think things are fine the way they are and those who feel things are “out of
order” and need to be put right. Many are working to “put things right” by
working for justice and equity in allocating global resources or protecting
and restoring the natural environment. The way forward is to combine the best
of traditional values with the energy and impetus of the new, incoming life
energies. This will create a higher synthesis that will open and expand
consciousness, while maintaining enough stability to allow us to adjust to the
increasingly rapid changes.
Throughout history,
we have seen many civilizations come and go. Our modern civilization is now
facing a great spiritual crisis, since the Sixth Ray patterns and paradigms we
have used to organize ourselves are no longer working. Once people see that
the old systems are really decaying and corrupted and cannot meet their needs,
they will withdraw legitimacy from them (as Willis Harman predicted) and
create new systems more accountable to the good of all, which thousands of
people are already doing.
The New Wisdom
Civilization
In the midst of
this fading, dysfunctional civilization, a New Wisdom Civilization (as
sociologist Paul Ray calls it) is being born from the spiritual radiance
of thousands of lighted human beings. Their creative projects around the
world are steadily growing in power and influence, because they carry the
energy of new life.
These subtle
networks of woven, lighted thought, visionary planning and activity that
encircle the globe are the fabric of this emerging new Seventh Ray
civilization. The most creative, practical visionaries of today stand steady
in this light, preserving the best values from the past, building new forms
for the new life to flow through.
Our times could be
compared to the end of the Roman Empire, when the Christians were a tiny sect
hiding in the catacombs keeping their vision alive. But eventually they used
the Roman roads to travel the remains of empire and spread their message,
sowing the seeds for the new civilization. So today we use the internet and
all the technology and tools created by the old empire to share spiritual
solutions to social problems and practical ways to live together on this
planet in unity, peace and plenty.
New Life
Emerging from the Compost Pile
Led by the
example of leaders such as The Dalai Lama, UN Secretary General Kofi Annan,
Gro Brundtland and Mary Robinson, thousands of world servers in every
country, race, and religion, are radiating their soul light into new
projects in every field such as:
 |
Interfaith
Dialogues |
 |
Conflict
Transformation Training |
 |
Socially
Responsible Business |
 |
Social
Investment |
 |
Spirit in
Business |

Psychology |
 |
Wholistic
Health |
 |
Organic Food
and Community Supported Agriculture |
 |
Vibrational
Energy Medicine |
 |
Sustainable
Development |
 |
Environmental
Restoration |
These projects,
like sprouts of new life emerging from the compost of the old order, are
showing up everywhere, and will continue to grow despite efforts to choke them
out. They cannot be stopped because they carry the power of the incoming, 7th
Ray Aquarian life energies. There currently exists a spiritually based
solution to every social problem that has already been pioneered by some
individual or group innovator. We need only support them with our fuller
attention and resources.
Why We’re
Optimistic
We are very
optimistic despite all the current problems we face, because we know
that evolution is moving in our direction ---towards the Unity of all
humanity-- and nothing--- absolutely nothing-- can stand for long
against the tide of evolution. No amount of money, violent force,
deceit, media spin, lies, or voting machine manipulation will
ultimately win because there are Higher Spiritual Forces supporting
what we are all trying to achieve. All we need to do is call upon Them
when we are in service to the whole, and They will ALWAYS provide the
insight, energy and resources we need to meet the needs at hand.
The task for each
of us is to discover what is our unique purpose and function in the Higher
Plan of evolution and to get really good at it. Just knowing our purpose is
not enough, for we also have to develop skill in action. And when we know our
purpose and are moving it forward with elegant action, we will experience an
ever flowing abundance of NEW LIFE. There is no function and no task that
cannot be made into a spiritual practice, and turned into a center for the
radiation of love, light and joy into the world.
If we all were
dedicated to fulfilling our unique higher purpose, what a wonderful world it
would be! Love would be present everywhere. And the world would be lifted out
of the darkness of separated, conflicted living into the light of oneness and
love.
This is no foolish
dream, for it is the dream that lives in the hearts and minds of all humanity,
even the most cynical. And when we speak and live this dream we call it forth
into being here in this world. Our task in this new era is to bring heaven
down to earth and lift earth towards heaven—this is the opportunity the
incoming Seventh Ray provides all of us. In the Great Plan, no situation,
however dire, is left without the spiritual help to create transformation.
So take heart, and seek out the
forces of new life wherever you find them. Give them your nurturing love,
financial support and your volunteer time and energy. It is both our challenge
and our blessing to be gifted with the spiritual destiny to create a new
civilization from the ashes of the old, and we are worthy and ready for this
challenge. Indeed, it is the purpose which we have all come here to fulfill.
