The Significance and Value of the United Nations
by Tom Carney

There are many things about The United Nations that are not so obvious but that, upon closer inspection, are extremely important and even revelatory. Perhaps the most important of all of these is the realization that The UN is one of the most recent and advanced manifestations of humanity’s evolving consciousness that we have. The starting point for such a realization is to understand that civilizations and cultures including all values, institutions and art forms are nothing more than the out picturing of the dominant consciousness of the time. Thus, by looking at the world wide evolution of the institution we call government, we get a very clear idea of the direction and progress of the evolution of humanity’s consciousness.

In general, the direction of evolution, as far as we can tack it with relative data, has been from a separative self conscious vision and notion of reality to a realization of the fact of the wholeness or unity, or oneness of reality. In terms of government the evolution of consciousness has patterned out over the centuries as a kind of pendulum movement between the notion of the divine right of kings to rule the world, to the realization of the collective right of the larger whole to determine its own destiny and progress. There have been periods of startling movement from the rule of Kings and Nobles toward a more collective kind of rule, and then lots of back sliding and then another jump forward.

The “divine right” of the King to rule was probably derived from the belief that in very, very ancient times a “King” was actually a highly evolved being who was acting as a messenger of God. This Being incarnated into the human race and was assigned the task of leading, by example and wisdom, an infant humanity into its maturity. When we look at humanity as a whole we can see that it has indeed evolved into a place where it can take on the rule and guidance of itself. It becomes apparent not only that humanity can, but that it must rule itself, for self direction and regulation is the sign of maturity and adulthood.

Thus, this evolutionary development can be clearly seen in the gradual development of power sharing with larger and larger groups of individuals and the shifting of “rights” from an exclusive individual or group of individuals to the collective whole.

One of the amazing things to realize about this expansion of power and rights sharing is that as the size of the collective grew, the power to achieve and create also grew. The principle of evolution that is noted here is that as consciousness expands through the inclusion of larger and larger segments of the field, power is shared. As power is shared it does not, as has been assumed from the separative self conscious perspective, become weaker. As an example of how synthesis, or as it is known in physics, fusion, works, when power is shared it becomes more powerful. In fact, it is the hording or refusal to share that turns power into a corrupting force rather than a Life fostering force.

The creation of the United States of America some 229 years ago, was, perhaps, the culmination of a series of expansions of consciousness which really became noticeable, one might arbitrarily state, with the signing of the Magna Carta in 1215. Some 500 years later, the creation of the United States and the drafting of its Constitution put forever the notion of the divine right of kings, or individuals by whatever designation—including the forms we call corporate executive and super wealthy individual, into which the old forms of king, duke and emperor have morphed—to rule over others, to rest. When one considers the length of time it took humanity to arrive at this place in consciousness, we should not be too alarmed that 229 years later we are still only in the beginning stages of implementing this giant step.

It becomes important for us all to understand that the birth of the United States of America, was an action of a collective consciousness. Although implemented through the courage and strength of a few dozen individuals, the drama that played out in 1776 was actually the culmination of several hundreds, if not thousands, of years of the evolution of consciousness.

Those drafters and signers were all the sons of women and men. That they were individuals of great courage and collective wisdom is well known. However, they were also individual representatives of what humanity was and is capable. These individuals were able to see from a group conscious point of view. They could understand to a very expanded degree the fact of the non-separate relationship of Humanity, its intrinsic interrelatedness and, likewise, the natural divinity of every person and hence the notion of universal equality. The birth of The United States of America was the result of the culmination of a phase of consciousness expansion implemented through many, many more individuals all over the world than those present at the drafting of the actual documents of independence.

The creation of the United States, through the power of a collective human consciousness, was and remains today a human creation. This creation signifies an unprecedented expansion, not of European or American consciousness, but of human consciousness. What happened in Philadelphia those couple of hundred years ago does not belong to the United States. It was the product of and belongs to Humanity, and it precipitated a giant leap forward in the development of government not for the United States of America, but for Humanity.

In terms of their meaning and significance, the principles stated in the Constitution are incredibly, startling pronouncements, and we have as yet to fully understand the meaning and significance of many of these ringing truths. For example take just the statements. “All men are created equal and are endowed by their creator with certain inalienable rights.” These are amazing ideas, and, as I have said, we have only scratched the surface of their deeper significances.

As our consciousness continued to expand from the separative self conscious vision into the new field of group consciousness, humanity banded together to stop a major attempt by the forces of retrogression to re-institute the old forms of government, the divine right of some superman to rule the world. The collective and allied efforts of humanity proved to be more powerful than those of the retrogressors, and were successful. At the close of that successful effort to protect and cherish our eons long advances into a new state of conscious understanding regarding the nature of the world, we came together and gave birth to the United Nations.

The creation of the United Nations some 60 years ago was the next natural step for humanity. The startling notions of universal self determination, equality and inalienable rights were extended to the entire world. While The United Nations is, perhaps not the only, or the first, it is, because of its vision and inclusive reach to the entire globe and all of humanity, regardless of race, national origin or creed, the most significant cultural and governmental structure or institution to which humanity has ever given birth. The product of a group conscious mind set and point of view, the United Nations is humanity’s first ever international/global cultural and governmental structure or institution. It is truly the prototype of the future government of the One Humanity.

It should come as no surprise that retrogressive forces are expending huge amounts of energy and killing vast numbers of people in a frantic and last ditch effort to stop the forward movement of the expansion of human consciousness. These forces of retrogression, the same forces that mounted and prosecuted both phases of the World War, are attempting in every way possible to shore up the crumbling structures of special privilege and power through the expansion of the illusion of separative and materialistic reality. There are those now and there have always been those, the entrenched recipients of separative privilege and power, who, using the weapons of greed and fear, will stoop to anything and stop at nothing to maintain their power and privilege.

However, these children of the night, the retrogressive forces of another time might just as soon stand upon the edge of the world and try to stop the sun from rising. The UN and indeed the United States, could not have come into form unless human consciousness had evolved into the space where it could see and understand the essential unity of the Human Race and the divine right, not of Kings, but of every single human being, to self determination, “to life liberty and the pursuit of happiness.”

Once seeded in human consciousness, this comprehension of reality will never be able to be stopped from growing and blooming. As we have begun to understand the nature of the Life within which we move, we are more able to see that the truths of yesterday and indeed, the truths of today, although true and noble for yesterday and today, are not the end of Truth. There are new understandings and new possibilities awaiting a courageous and noble race, the race we call Humanity.

For example, our group conscious comprehension of the basic inclusive nature of reality has grown greatly over the past 200 years and is rapidly including the three lower kingdoms of nature. We have come to realize that human life is inextricably involved with the health and life of the planet itself. Thus, we are very concerned about global warming, about the spread of poison in our air, water and food supplies through chemical fertilizers, waste products from oil and gas production and the use of atomic munitions like depleted uranium. We are concerned about many, many very unhealthy processes in food production and consumption. The principles of cooperation and sustainability are rapidly replacing the illusions of competition and greed for immediate profit. And, we have, many, many of us, finally come to the realization of the futility of war as a problem solving methodology, and we are unalterably opposed to its use.

It takes only a moment to understand that all of those problems which are making life almost unbearable for many, many millions of our brothers and sisters around the world are the results of programs and processes that have been derived from a separative self conscious point of view. And it takes only a moment more to understand that the solution to these problems really lies in a group conscious concept which is precisely what we have in the United Nations. These are humanity’s problems. We made them through thousands of years of separative and exclusive, unconscious living. Now we have birthed the United Nations and the avenue to the solutions to Humanity’s problems, to a truly Lighted House, lies open before us. It remains for us to see this, to protect it and to use it.
